DVD
DVD是一种全动态、全屏播放的视频标准。它的格式可分为：分辨率为352×240像素，每秒29.97幅画面（适合NTSC制式电视播放）；分辨率为352×240像素，每秒23.976幅画面 ；分辨率为352×288像素，每秒25幅画面（适合PAL制式电视播放）光盘整体来说分辨率大约是对应电视制式分辨率的四分之一。DVD的视频采用MPEG-1压缩编码，音频采用MPEG 1/2 Layer 2(MP2)编码。码率分别为视频1150kbit/s，音频224kbit/s。 整个视频质量和VHS录像带相当。由于DVD的比特率和普通音乐CD相当，因此，一张标准的74分钟的CD可以存放大约74分钟的DVD格式的视频。
DVD在亚洲地区被广泛使用。在香港，DVD和VCD在发行市场上已完全取代录像带和镭射影碟的地位。VCD被认为会被DVD所取代，但是由于它的一些特点，还将保持一段时间的市场。VCD没有像DVD一样的区码限制，这意味着它可以在任何兼容机器上观看。有些节目因为成本问题，不会制作DVD或VHS录像带版本，购买者只能购买DVD版本。VCD比DVD廉价，制作成本也较低。当然，VCD缺乏DVD提供的很多额外特性，如强劲的选单功能（用作制作花絮）等。
