古罗马七丘之一巴勒登丘(Palatine)起初是罗马古城的主要部分。后来，随着城市的发展，巴勒登就成了达官贵人、时髦的上流阶层的聚居区。古罗马政治家西塞罗(Cicero，公元前106-43)和阴谋家加蒂兰(Catiline，公元前108-62)的府第就在这里。整个巴勒登丘的山坡上，有钱人家的房舍鳞次栉比。

到了尼禄(罗马暴君，Nero，公元37-68年，在位期间54-68年)当朝时，他想独霸巴勒登山丘，就下令将住房夷为平地。他的建筑师为他精心设计了一套住所，取名叫”palatium”，字面意思是”在巴勒登丘之上”，是那里的第一座宫殿。

法兰西国王参照palatium这个词，把自己住的宫殿叫作”palais”。这个词进入英语后，起初写作paleys，后来演变成今天的palace。
