英语「genre」一词到底如何翻译合适？

我是在英美文学里接触到的这个词，不知道在音乐领域也有运用。于是去刨根问底，追溯了一番，才知道原来genre的应用是如此广泛：

genre的运用很广泛，有关人文的许多方面，如：文学、艺术、音乐等都对genre有所应用。（小小的猜测：我想这与genre这个词的来源有关：法语、拉丁语、希腊语都是英语比较“高贵”“正统”的来源），与“类”“范畴”有相关意思。

这是一个法语词。美国人一直就比教崇尚法国文化，尤其是法语本身吐字发音就给人一种性感的感觉（个人认为）。在加上英语中本身就有许多法语词（历史背景就不讲了),所以美国人大多喜欢用法语词，就像有些中国人喜欢在说话的时候用英语词汇一样。如果看IMBD的话，＂genre＂就是电影类型的分类，如：romcom, romance, document,drama等。
