翻译生意经

我过去在西弗吉尼亚的一同事，给我转来一篇关于翻译的文章，作者是科琳·麦吉(C orinneM cK ay)。我顺滕摸瓜，找到了麦吉写的一本《兼职翻译指南》一书，从网上买了下来。这书显然是写给新手的，但是我自己也发现颇有用处。最大的启发，是她把兼职翻译，当成了一门生意在做。我过去做了很多年兼职翻译，一直以文艺中年自居，没想到自己当了很多年生意人还不知道。

她这本“生意经”面面俱到，写到了兼职翻译会遇到的各种问题，比如营销、收款、资源、办公设备等等。她笔下，做翻译和经营一个小本生意没什么两样。美国做这种活，每年报税的时候，还可以把各种成本报上去，比如在家办公，家里的电话与网络，如业务需要，费用都可以抵税。有时候甚至家里除虫之类的开销，都可以按照一定比例上报，作为业务成本的一部分。当然，如果太离谱，也会引起税务管理部门的怀疑和检查。在报税的时候，业余爱好和生意，二者之间的界限是模糊的。如果当成生意来做，有的人把各种开销都放进去，结果年年亏本。连续几年亏本，税务部门就不准你继续拿这事当生意来报税了。

麦吉还在书中介绍了如何向客户、向翻译机构推销自己，如何利用网络扩大自己的资源，等等。她甚至介绍了如何写简历，如何写自我介绍信件。比如简历部分，她还分别介绍了美国、欧洲、亚洲人写简历一些不同的地方。在亚洲的简历上，大家会提供不少个人信息，比如年龄、婚姻等，甚至提供个人照片，而在美国，这些信息是不需要提供的，雇主更不能去索要，否则涉嫌歧视。

看了看这书，我又找到她的网站上看了看。这位麦姐还真能折腾。除了写书写博客扩大自己在业内影响之外，她还开了业余翻译网络课程，学费每人三百多，确实是生财有道啊。除此之外，她还提供一些咨询服务，帮助新手整理简历等。她是把自己的自由职业往纵深里做了，做得很是专业。既然她有客户，说明在美国从事此营生，还是颇有些前途的。

只不过我觉得她的很多建议到了中国行不通。国内的翻译，虽然业务很多，但是市场比较无序，也很浮躁，难找到麦吉这样职业化思考的从业人员。过去我在一管理顾问公司当翻译，我们当时的中国翻译组人员，分别来自北京、上海、香港和台北。我们四个办公室的翻译经常会开些电话会议。我们发现，台湾和香港的翻译，做事情都一板一眼，好像一辈子都在做翻译。但是我们大陆的几个都各怀鬼胎，都想着怎么去考G RE、G M A T留学出去学M BA什么的。在我们的职业思考里，翻译不是终端的职业，通常是跳板。

到了美国，反倒觉得人们可以做这门小本经营的生意，不觉得有什么不妥。这个现象我跟国内一朋友交流过。他回答说，也不是翻译这一行特殊，国内哪个老老实实做事的行当被人当回事？
