公交的英文报站应该是音译还是意译？为什么？

最近坐公交发现报站名都是音译，例如“Next stop is Dongfengqiaonan（下一站东风桥南）”，这种音译的报站方式对英语国家的乘客的帮助不如意译，为什么公交运营公司还一直用这种方式报站？

我认为最好的地名翻译，全部都是音译，不要一点意译
原因是，最基本的地名用到的地方，你都完全不会在乎它到底是什么意思，对于英语国家的乘客，完全可以通过详细的解释，而不需要直接在名字上体现这种意义。
而一旦地名出现意译后，当外国人与中国人交流地方的时候（这是绝大多数情况），中国人会完全不明白他在说什么地方。特别是问路的时候！！！！这完全是致命的！！！！！

也吐个槽，之前一个美国的朋友来跟我强烈吐槽，为什么车上的报站名不用中文的发音，而要去掉声调，全部用美国的调调。让她经常非常困惑到底是不是对的地方。。。
她知道五道口的发音，但是她对于屋刀扣到底是不是五道口非常困惑。。这样的感觉让她非常不爽。。这种感觉就像，噢，你是美国来的，那我们要请你们吃你们的东西——麦当劳。。。
不要觉得你把发音改为美国的调调了就是对他们有好处，这只有坏得没有好的。地名就是标准的地名，是要能取得所有人理解的。

提供在日本的经验：日本的电车地铁报站，也是日文英文都有，英文就是很简单，地名的日文读法。很明显，提供英文就是为了给游客提供便利，那么可以试想，到了上海，老外要找人民广场，是问路边老大妈“people’s square”好呢？还是直接“renmin guangchang”好呢？哪怕是发音再不标准，我想他也能找到正确的方向。
至于为什么中国喜欢用这种莫名甚至错误的英文报站或者标识，我想可能是想显示，咱也懂外语吧？

综合来看，我们这里的公交报站是音译与意译结合。

对于本文化背景的人来说，一个地点的命名有着背后的文化原因，而对于没有这个文化背景的外国人来说，地名只是这个地点的代号而已。他首先需要知道的是这个地名的发音，这样才能和当地环境进行沟通，快速的到达目的地，因此地名还是音译更方便。

这个我觉得得分类讨论
以我近几年和外国大学生打交道的情况来看，7成左右是会完全采用汉语读音的。
比如人民广场，他们大多都是说renminguangchang 并不是都采取报站时的people square
汉字有意义的路名对他们来说可能都是无意义的乱码。还不如直接采取音译。这样报站的时候他们乱来的几率也比较小。
另一方面，问路也是一个问题。当他们无法遇到能准确理解英语翻译的路人的时候，求助起来就有困难了，而如果能将发音发个八九不离十，路人多少能听明白对方想去哪里。也能提高效率。

但是就东南西北这种方向词来说，还是应该有标注的。 可是由于习惯问题。 中山北路 的 North通常是放在第一个字，也就出现过我遇到的问题，很多学生问我南乌鲁木齐路在哪里。虽然这是无伤大雅的，但我觉得可能有必要在中文字序上进行一下调整。也方便音译+提示方向一起出现。

个人觉得对于一个不懂中文且初来乍到外国友人而言，音译的帮助或许会比意译更大些。了解到这一站对于“Dongfengqiao”的相对位置并不能保证该友人一定能顺利抵达自己的目的地，因为并不是很多乘客都懂得“南”和“South”的等价关系。此时，“South Dongfengqiao”变得没有意义。但是，如果此人可以较为准确的发出“Dongfengqiaonan”的读音，说不定车上任意一位不懂英语的好心人就可以提醒他/她及时下车了。

最后，补充一个跑题的内容，希望能帮助您对答案的理解。英国伦敦地铁的Northern line有一站叫”Angel（中文可译作‘天使’）”，如果您向一位中国留学生问路，是问“请问Angel站怎么走？”还是“请问天使站怎么走？”呢？

我觉得一般来说属于地名的部分还是音译的好，就好像英文地名wall street 翻译成中文是叫华尔街，而不是叫墙街。因为意译的话可能有很多不同的标准，难以统一，而且其实更加不利于外国人认路。
但是国内翻译存在一个问题是音译也把后面那个字也音译了。好像南京地铁说“胜太路”就说成是“shengtai lu”而不是“shengtai road”。这样让人感觉很奇怪，因为凸显不出这是一条路，好像lu也是地名的一部分了。就好比华尔街换成华尔斯坠特一样，极度诡异。貌似这是参照北京奥运翻译标准制定的，好吧，反正我是经常很难理解砖家们的想法的。

如同“中山北路”到底是North Dr.Sun Yat-sen Road，还是Zhong Shan Bei Lu。

我倾向于前者。
必要时可以把后者放在括号里，附在后面。
