为什么科隆（Köln）在英语里要叫作 Cologne？

公元前39年，屋大维的密友，罗马名将阿格里帕将一支与罗马结盟的日尔曼部落送过莱茵河，在西岸定居。公元50年，阿格里帕的孙女，出生在这个地方的小阿格里帕，请求她的丈夫，当时的罗马皇帝克劳迪乌斯将她的家乡升格为 Colonia ，也就是「殖民城市」。殖民市的公民享有罗马公民权。这个殖民地的拉丁全称为 Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium ，「克劳迪乌斯以及阿格里帕圣坛的殖民市」，简称 Colonia Agrippina ，「阿格里帕殖民市」。这样的殖民城市当时有许多，但最后以殖民地为名的城市就仅科隆一个了。意大利语中，科隆直到今日仍旧是 Colonia。

科隆后来成为短命的高卢帝国首都，罗马帝国开始崩溃时，这块地方终于被法兰克人抢走。Cologne 是从通俗拉丁语及法兰克语脱胎而来的法语对于 Colonia 一词的转写，gn 在法语中发硬腭鼻音 ɲ ，与 原词 nia 的发音基本一致。Köln 则是德语的转写。

法国人打到英国的时候把这个词带进了英语，那时候还没有德国，德语也只是下里巴人的语言。
