中译外版书每个字都认识，但连成句却不知所云

“每个字都认识，但连成句却不知所云”，这是很多读者对当前外版书的直观印象。外版书越来越多，但堪称经典的译文已不多见。
应该说，出现译著翻译质量不断下降的现象，出版社难辞其咎。由于外版书的出书成本越来越定高，只好降低翻译成本，此举是中国出版社的不得已而为之。中国入世后，翻译出版外版书需要支付高额的版税，外版书出版成本一下子抬高了很多是重要原因。
随着大规模的出版改革，出版单位从事业单位变为企业，失去国家财政庇护的国有出版单位不得不走向市场，与民营图书公司争夺市场份额。为降低成本，出版商首先从翻译稿费上开刀。还有一些出版商为赶热点市场，缩短了翻译时间，让图书翻译质量失去了保障。还有一部分出版单位失去了底线，对公版名著进行“中译中”，以便进一步降低成本。例如，《旧制度与大革命》畅销以后，出版界涌现了几十个版本，多数是“中译中”的产物。再如卡耐基的成功学书籍已经有数千品种了，多数也是“中译中”的产物。如果说缩短翻译时间的行为可以理解，那么“中译中”的行为就越出了道德底线，等同于剽窃，为人所不齿。
翻译文本下降是出版行业内非常严重的问题。之所以产生这个问题，是中国翻译界与出版界规章制度的建设落后于出版界国际化与市场化的步伐造成的。对中国出版界来说，规范翻译合同、保障译者的权利是解决这一问题的重要途径。
