瞿秋白是第一个把《国际歌》翻译成中文的“红色翻译家”

這一時期，瞿秋白的翻譯涉及社會、教育、文化等方面，體現了以科學民主對抗封建愚昧、以改革社會、救國救民的核心思想。如譯介托爾斯泰的《閑談》，旨在號召人們不再信仰上帝，上帝是統治階級用來愚弄百姓的謊言。譯介托爾斯泰的《祈禱》，是以仆人的口道出:“各人應該各自盡力，隻有自己盡力的人方才能夠得到益處”。譯介果戈裡的《仆御室》，以揭露俄國下層社會的黑暗和官場怪狀。通過果戈裡的《婦女》、都德的《付過工錢之后》，控訴廣大婦女被奴役的悲慘地位，宣言婦女解放、男女平等、打破封建枷鎖。

瞿秋白之所以主要翻譯介紹俄國作品，是他認為俄國的國情與中國的情況十分相近，如果戈理的《仆御室》、《婦女》所描寫的俄國社會的丑惡現象，在中國同樣存在。瞿秋白要通過這種文學作品喚醒人們，推動社會變革，正如他在翻譯《仆御室》的“后記”裡寫道的:文學作品描寫刻畫“社會的惡”，以文學藝術的方法變更人生觀，打破社會習慣，有助於改變社會的惡。在《〈俄羅斯名家短篇小說集〉序》中指出:隻有因社會的變動，而后影響於思想，因思想的變化，而后影響於文學。

1920年10月，瞿秋白離開北京。他以北京《晨報》和上海《時事新報》特約通訊員的名義前往社會主義國家蘇聯，踏上了一條畢生為之奮斗的人生新途——革命的“紅色之旅”。

他擔任莫斯科東方大學中國班的翻譯和助教，兩次見到列寧，加深了對世界上第一個社會主義國家的認識，接受了馬克思主義的洗禮。在為北京《晨報》、上海《時事新報》撰寫的通訊報道和《餓鄉紀程》、《赤都心史》兩部散文集中，系統地介紹了俄國革命的實踐，熱情地歌頌了十月革命、領袖列寧和布爾什維克黨，預示十月革命的“一線光明”將“照遍大千世界”。1922年，經張太雷介紹，加入了中國共產黨。1923年，回國，負責中共宣傳工作，擔任中共中央機關刊物《新青年》編輯。在從事職業革命工作的同時，“紅色翻譯”成為他革命活動的重要組成部分，他不僅翻譯了高爾基等蘇俄作家的文學作品，還大量地翻譯和宣傳馬克思列寧主義的文藝理論著作和政治著作，包括《馬克思主義文藝論文集》、《論列寧主義基礎》等，體現出濃厚的馬克思主義特色和革命斗爭色彩。

瞿秋白還第一個把《國際歌》譯成中文，發表於1923年6月15日的《新青年》第一期。歌詞與當今流行版本不太相同，但其基本精神是一致的，“起來，受人污辱咒罵的！起來，天下飢寒的奴隸！滿腔熱血沸騰，拼死一戰決矣。舊社會破壞得徹底，新社會創造得光華。莫道我們一錢不值，從今要普及天下……”要讓“全中國受壓迫的勞苦平民，也能和世界無產階級得以同聲相應。”

在1931年1月7日的中共六屆四中全會上，瞿秋白被解除中央領導職務，不再擔任中央政治局委員。但他的“紅色翻譯家”歷程並未停止，他帶病(肺結核)翻譯了大量作品。1931到1933年間，翻譯了高爾基的《高爾基論文選集》、《高爾基創作選集》、《二十六個和一個》、《馬爾華》、《市儈頌》、《克裡慕·薩莫京的生活》，盧那察爾斯基的《解放了的堂·吉訶德》，別德訥衣的《沒工夫唾罵》，綏拉菲摩維支的《一天的工作》、《岔道夫》，普希金的《茨岡》，革拉特柯夫的《新土地》等，並與魯迅、茅盾等人風雨同舟，成為中國左翼文化的主要文藝批評家、左翼文化運動的領袖之一，共同推動革命文化的發展。

瞿秋白的一生是短暫的，但其革命家與翻譯家的經歷充滿了光輝。他所翻譯的作品，政治與文學並重，特色鮮明，被魯迅譽為“信而且達，並世無兩，”是中國近現代翻譯史上的一面旗幟！
