导演解释：导演蔡尚君表示很喜欢这种莫名的英文转换：“它大概源于七十年代，是中式英语的生硬翻译。正是为生硬，我认为它粗粝生动，具有无形力量。这力量来自人，无数的人；来自这些人生存其间的各自场所，如山如海，是喧嚣的浮生尘世。无尽的人山人海中，一个人执拗地追踪一个不相识的人，全然基于一次偶然的遭遇，却彻底改变了他的一生。

“中式英语”译名早有先例
继影片的英文译名公布后，不少网友和电影爱好者都被其“中式英语”译名提起了兴趣。国内电影作品的英文名大都十分考究，不仅富有深意而且兼具语言美感。比如李安执导、梁朝伟汤唯主演的《色戒》，英文名译作“Lust&Caution”，充满隐喻和哲理的色彩。陈凯歌导演的经典之作《霸王别姬》则译作“Farewell My Concubine”，汉意为“再见，我的小老婆”，看似戏谑幽默，实则与剧情形成强烈反差，凸显悲剧结局。但也有不少经典佳作另辟蹊径，在英文译名上选择“直译”的方法，也获得了影迷的热烈响应。比如宁浩导演的《疯狂的石头》，就译作“Crazy Stone”。李安导演的经典武侠电影《卧虎藏龙》，译作“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”。此次《人山人海》的《People Mountain People Sea》，让人在诧异好奇之余也对该片的剧情产生了更多的期待。
英语考试和翻译时不能这样翻，虽然幽默：
