航空公司(Airlines)是指以各种航空飞行器为运输工具，以空中运输的方式运载人员或货物的企业。 国际民航组织（英文：International Civil Aviation Organization，简称ICAO）是联合国属下专责管理和发展国际民航事务的机构。国际民用航空组织为全球各航空公司指定的三个字母的ICAO航空公司代码。国际民航组织还是国际范围内制定各种航空标准以及程序的机构，以保证各地民航航空公司运作的一致性。
大部分的国际航空公司都是国际航空运输协会（简称IATA）的成员，以便和其它航空公司共享连程中转的票价、机票发行等等标准。国际航空运输协会为全球各航空公司指定的两个字母的IATA航空公司代码，但是有许多地区性的航空公司或者低成本航空公司并非国际航空运输协会的成员。各大航空公司通常已经在国际民航组织登记自己的呼号。呼号通常都是航空公司的名称，但也有例外的，再在呼号后加上航班编号，一些满载的大型航机会在呼号后再加上HEAVY(Cathay-seven-one-seven-heavy)，让航空管制员知道该航班特重，不能执行一些指令(像保持低速、飞到更高高度等等)。
