本地的人对于本地的称呼，叫做 endonym，“本地地名”。外地的人对于这个地方的称呼，是所谓的 exonym，“外来地名”[1]。

先从慕尼黑说起。与科隆及德国乃至世界上很多其他城市的“英文”名称一样，Munich 其实是慕尼黑的法语拼写，然后被引入英文，继而随着英语的世界范围扩张而传入中国。在法语里，Munich 的发音非常接近 München 的德语发音（ 法语的 u 发音与 ü 相同，i-ch 类似 /iʃ/，跟德语 ch 的 /ç/ 很相似，毕竟法语里面没有这个所谓的 voiceless palatal fricative，作为法文字母的 ç 是不发这个音的）。但这个词传到英语里就被“念白”了，类似于中国人见到东京会念 dōng-jīng 而不是 tō-kyō 的道理。至于为什么汉语中根据英语 Munich 翻译为慕尼黑，大概因为这个地名是在英文强盛的时代才传入中文的吧，虽然“巴燕”这样的译名也存在过。毕竟“名从主人”这样的译名规范是后来才出现的，最初的译者很少会顾及这些。终极原因其实是查证困难，最后也只能讹传下去，虽然如此一来，如果说法语中的 exonym 还算是努力贴近 endonym，那么中文所产生的 exonym 发音就演变到亲爹也不认得的地步了。还有个有趣的例子是 Helvetica 字体的诞生地，瑞士巴塞尔附近的小镇 Münchenstein。如果要沿袭既有的惯例，这个地方当作“慕尼黑施泰因”，但这听起来非常别扭，而且两者之间相距甚远，也许还是按照音译“明兴施泰因”好一些。

接下来说 Bayern。在德国的华人很少会在讲中文的时候说“巴伐利亚”，通常就只说“拜仁”，因为 Bavaria 这个词在德语环境中出现得很少，只有说英语的时候会用到。但 Bavaria 其实也并不是英语——如同这个联邦州周边所有 -ia 结尾的地名和古地名（Austria、Bohemia、Italia、Romania）一样，这是个源自拉丁语的地名，意思就是巴伐利人（Bavarii）居住的地方，与波西米亚（Bohemia）同源。历史上第一次提到“巴伐利亚”是在公元六世纪。我们可以说此时作为德语的 Bayern 这个词还不存在——至少，远远没有流通起来——因为现代意义上的标准德语要等到遥遥一千年后才定型。而巴伐利亚成为现代意义上民族国家的德国一部分是什么时候呢？一八七一年。Bayern 这种拼写甚至直到一八二五年才是官方标准，由当时的巴伐利亚国王路德维希一世下令更改，此前巴伐利亚王国的名字拼写做 Baiern，路德维希把 I 变作 Y，是因为，呃，他崇洋媚外，喜欢希腊文化[3]——而 Y 这个字母实际上是希腊字母，拉丁语里面本来是没有的，在德语中也出现得非常少，少到德语键盘上 Y 和 Z 位置要互换的程度，名字也都按照希腊语念法叫作依普西龙（Ypsilon）。

如此一来我们可以推断一件事情——“巴伐利亚”这个名字出现得比“拜仁”早，传播范围也更广泛一些。就好象奥地利没有叫做约斯特莱希（Österreich）而叫做奥地利（Austria）一样，既然那里早就有一个地名了，就一直用下去好了。至少，在这个国家出于某种莫名其妙的心结要求别人在汉语里面改变其固有翻译之前（嗯我在挖苦某邻国（首都）没错），沿用这个地名是无可厚非的。我没办法知道中文里面“巴伐利亚”一词何时出现，但应该和“慕尼黑”相去不远。所以我只能合理地推断，译者采用了当时比较通用的 exonym。

拜仁慕尼黑则是另一种状况。这支球队的官方德语名称叫做 FC Bayern München，但英语里叫做 Bayern Munich——可以看到，英文里面同样保存了 Bayern 这一部分。为什么呢？因为对于英国人来说（不看足球的美国人看法可以忽略了），Bayern 是一个专有名词，只在足球领域里面有意义，就是代表这支俱乐部所在的地名。对此，卫报的这段读者解答[4]总结得很好：

In the case of football teams (which the term Bayern Munich is exclusively reserved for) we are simply transating the place names for Enlgish speaking ears, but retaining what in a British context is often referred to as the football “surname” (Rovers, City, Villa, United etc.) tradtionally used to identify it (sometimes to distinguish another team that uses the same place name as in Manchester United and Manchester City) Hence the suffix (or prefix) becomes a proper noun and what it actually translates as is irrelevant. Furthermore Bavaria Munich would have no meanings since if we wanted to refer to the place name rather than the football teams name in German it would be Munchen, Bayern (Munich, Bavaria) not Bayern Munchen (omlat of course)

最后，日常汉语中对于德国联邦州名称乃至德国地名的翻译相当混乱，并无一定之规，追问其原因，真的会让人想破脑袋。比如——

• Baden-Württemberg， 巴登-符腾堡：纯音译，但“符”字改变了辅音，与 Wü(r) 并不一致，并且没有什么合理的解释。实际上，“巴登伍騰堡邦”的翻译方法可见于很多台湾人的书写之中。巴伐利亚州的 Würzburg 也常常翻译为“伍尔兹堡”。
• Nordrhein-Westfalen，北莱茵－威斯特法伦：半音译半意译，翻译了“北”（Nord）却不翻译“西”（West）……
• Mecklenburg-Vorpommern，梅克伦堡－前波美拉尼亚：半音译半意译，但“波美拉尼亚”源自其别称“Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania”，“前”却是来自官方称呼里面的“Vor”。不要问我为什么……

Bavaria有说法是按拉丁文音译的, 因为它们有自己的语言 (这地区一开始不属于德意志), 而且受拉丁文影响: 根据Googletranslate的结果, 德语 Bayern翻译到拉丁文确实是Bavaria, 发音也是巴伐利亚, 看起来比较靠谱.

我想应该是不同语言场景，更突出巴伐利亚的地域特色。
就好像德国在全球一般称为germany，但是欧洲用Deutschland更多一些。
