莫言谈小说不能为了方便翻译而降低对语言的追求

8月13日，作家莫言与叙利亚诗人阿多尼斯在北京展开了一场主题为 “文学在古老东方的使命”的论坛。在谈及文学作品的翻译时，莫言表示：“我在上世纪80年代写作时没有考虑过我的作品要翻译成外文，那时我所面对的只是中国读者。如今中国作家的作品越来越多地受到国际的关注，所以文学作品的翻译是整个作家群面对的一个问题。 ”莫言认为，作家写作时就应该忘掉翻译，痛快淋漓地表达内心的想法，不能为了方便翻译而降低对语言的追求。同时，他认为翻译是一种创作，高明的翻译家无论面对多难翻译的作品都会翻译得很好。
同时身为翻译家的阿多尼斯则称：“文学作品中，翻译诗歌比翻译小说更难。每一种语言都有自己的结构，诗歌的翻译者要破坏原有的结构去建立一种相似的结构。诗歌的翻译者必须是诗人，但是小说的翻译者不一定是小说家。 ”
