多简单的原因啊，磁碟中的间谍名单。（大陆当然叫磁盘了）。

电影第一集里，布拉格的美使馆工作人员亚力山大·葛里森偷走了CIA的半份间谍名单。电影开头，伊森·亨特的小组就是要去抓 亚力山大·葛里森。抓捕任务败得一塌糊涂，然后伊森·亨特跑路，他发誓要找回名单为自己洗冤，为死去的队友们洗冤。

整部电影，都是围绕着这张装着间谍名单的磁碟在讲故事。

《碟中谍》是上译的译名。我个人觉得算是国内引进大片的片名翻译中排名前三甲的翻译（《盗梦空间》算另一个），基本做到了“信、达、雅”的标准。
（“碟中谍”这个译名整体感觉偏老派一些，类似“魂断蓝桥”一类的。但考虑到第一部MI引进时的国内文化环境，这个译名可以说是当时最好的了。对第一部MI剧情有了解的朋友，大多数都会觉得“碟中谍”这个译名很传神。）
后来，就是约定俗成了。这个系列的4部都引进国内了，所以续集肯定都沿用第一部的译名了。

（内地的中文电影片名都偏好三个字或四个字的片名，主要是琅琅上口，便于传播。这和不同的流行文化背景有关系吧。）

因为第一集里有间谍，也有数据光盘，而且玄机颇多，故被翻译成《碟中谍》了——我很怀疑这是香港同仁的产物。

碟中谍1用这个翻译不错，后面的属于惯性被迫，我觉得直译《不可能的任务》也不错，好多片子的翻译我觉得直译还更好，比如蜘蛛人，翻译成蜘蛛侠，不知所谓。
当然，那种虎胆龙威、虎膽妙算之类的翻译就更不知所谓了，感觉很垃圾。

我觉得 “碟中谍” 这是个翻译错误的名字，如果能翻译为 “谍中谍”，那将是因错就错更贴切的名字。

碟中谍系列电影都有一个共同的情节逻辑，即一开始的秘密间谍任务失败，继而在失败线索中发现峰回路转的新任务， 而最后曝光任务将揭露开始任务其实是一个骗局，或是一个“掩盖” 线索的迷局。并且谍中谍系列电影都涉及到国家安全的 “间谍” 谍战，在人物角色上，也刻意的在编纂着“间谍中的（双面、多面、背叛）间谍” 这样的人物特征。

所以，这系列电影比较贴切的名字应该是 “谍中谍”，意指间谍中的间谍（卧底和背叛），也指出电影情节的转折手法（谍战与反谍战）。
