一些（内地）公司的英文名称发音与其中文发音相似，但在英文词典中不存在，他们命名时考虑的因素有哪些？为什么不直接用汉语拼音?比如腾讯为什么译为 Tencent？

1998年10月的一个上午，马化腾把张志东约到一家咖啡馆，开始集中精力构思着即将注册的公司名。他们俩不约而同地想到了美国朗讯科技公司，那是一家在当时相当有名气的通讯公司，以技术为导向。而马化腾之前服务的公司叫润迅，也有个同音的“讯”字，同样发展得很不错。这个发现让开发出身的马化腾和张志东兴奋不已。讯，意思是通讯、信息，代表着公司今后的定位及方向。敲定“讯”字，十几个讯字组合便跃然纸上：网讯、捷讯、飞讯、腾讯……带着创业者的兴奋与梦想，马化腾和张志东来到市工商局注册。在他和张志东的理解中，“网讯”是最为理想的公司名称，它直截了当地告诉人们，公司与互联网息息相关，这也是他们热爱、兴趣、做梦都想进驻的行业；“捷讯”位居其二，因为“捷”字的意思是“快捷、便捷”，便利而快速的反应与服务，充分体现了网络的优势；“飞讯”，代表着公司发展的远景与自己的梦想，想想在无边的网络天空与漫漫人生天地间自由飞翔，是多么令人向往的事情。而“腾讯”似乎总不如前三者理想，虽然它借用了自己名字中的“腾”字。事情就是很巧，马化腾把所有想到的名字都试过了，却发现，只有“腾讯”闪着绿色通行。

“深圳市腾讯计算机系统有限公司”，公司注册的中文名确定下来后，张志东提出，还应该有一个读音相近的英文名，就像朗讯，Lucent。马化腾想了一下，“Tencent”脱口而出。在腾讯后来的发展中，毗邻深圳的香港人对Tencent的读音有了些变化，他们将“Ten”和“Cent”分开成为两个单词，所以经常会有人好奇的问公司的名字为什么要叫“十分钱”。张志东笑着说：“我们就解释说那时手机兴起，短信费用是一毛钱一条，刚好十分钱，而腾讯正是从手机业务中寻找到突破点的。”自那时起，Tencent的来历便又多了一种解释。

就这样，1998年11月11日，腾讯公司诞生了。选择“光棍节”这一天注册仅仅是个巧合，但是在这个巧合的背后，早已积聚了创始团队对未来的笃定和梦想。正如Tencent标志后一个“T”上的纸飞机造型，是童年时对天空的向往，也是创业时对前路的追求。

因爲英文名稱是給外國人用的，外國人不知道怎麼讀漢語拼音。比如偉大的 baidu，外國人會把 bai 讀成「北」，後面的 du……我不知道他們會讀成什麼。所以百度不但最懂中文，同時也要求外國人學中文，實在是中華民族文明復興的急先鋒。騰訊顯然就沒這個底氣了嘛。

tencent通过个人用户的小力量成长，取这个名字有以用户为依归的意思，也有努力做到十分的意思，同时也能反映互联网共享、分智的精神（还是我猜）。

用一个从来没有用过的词汇，更能突出自己的形象，不容易混淆，同时更有利于开拓非中国市场，因为英语是世界淫民喜闻乐见的语言啊哈~再加上本身互联网产品不像其他实体产品一样受到众多地理环境的限制嘛。后来众多互联网企业赴境外上市就说明大家取名字的时候都是有雄心壮志的。
这让我想起了联想lenovo这个商标。

本来他们打算用legend作为商标的，后来发现欧美市场用legend做商标的企业太多了，于是想自己另辟蹊径，产生了lenovo这个词汇。其中“Le”取自原标识“Legend”，代表着秉承其一贯传统，新增加的“novo”取自拉丁词“新”，代表着联想的核心是创新精神。
