卡明斯基：翻译诗歌和读诗是由于饥饿

东方早报：《舞在敖德萨》是你第一本诗集。尽管这里面的诗写于不同的时期，但这些诗组成了一个完整的结构，写你的成长、移居和你祖国的历史命运。这样一本诗集结构是预先设定的吗？
卡明斯基：我认为写一首诗和写一本书是一个道理。我在写诗的时候，不是一开始就有一个结构，而是走到街上，看到任何新鲜的事物，鸟儿、阳台上讲话的女人、提着一只鸡的女人等等，看到这些景象，我就把它们记下来。好的就保留，不好的就扔掉。一本诗集也是如此，我不会一开始就有完整结构，而是一点点地收集。全部的诗都在反映生活，这就成了一本书。我想引用一句话：如果这本书里有37首诗的话，这本书就是第38首。
东方早报：你从十一二岁就开始写诗。16岁你来到美国，重新学习一门语言。什么时候你觉得，你的英语足够你写诗歌了？
卡明斯基：这是一个悲伤的故事。1994年，我父亲去世之后，我不想让家里人知道我在写什么。我就换了一种语言用英语，而且我那时必须要写。所以，并不是我有意识的决定，“好，现在我要用英语去写”。我完全是因为想用另外一种语言去写，这样家人就不知道。
东方早报：那个时候你对英语的掌握肯定还没有达到熟练。但诗歌是一门语言的艺术，你怎么看内心写诗的激情和对新语言的陌生？
卡明斯基：写诗是要熟练的语言技巧，所以我一开始并没有发表诗歌。一直到我写了六七年英语诗后才开始发表，所以我的第一本诗集也很薄。你爱上一种语言，就像你爱上一个姑娘，希望她更漂亮。诗人常有两种感受，一种自认为是语言大师，一种就是希望自己的语言日臻完美。所以关键的是，如何让语言更漂亮。
东方早报：你和纳博科夫、布罗茨基一样，都是来自俄罗斯/苏联的写作者，你认为自己和美国本土诗人的区别在哪里？
卡明斯基：我跟他们有太多的区别，正如同我与自己家人的区别一样。美国是没有历史的国家，当今的美国诗人，能写出历史的只有黑人诗人，因为他们能写出痛苦的来源。我相信这点。其他人写美国历史，太肤浅和不可信。我来自于一个有太多历史的地方，但我想走出来。其实，今天的俄罗斯文学在欧洲不强，甚至比不上白俄罗斯和乌克兰。
东方早报：你对布罗茨基推崇备至，在这本诗集中也有不少内容是关于他的。你跟他一样，来到美国之后重新用英语写作、翻译，也对白银诗人非常推崇，你认为自己跟他的区别在哪里？
卡明斯基：布罗茨基也是属于白银时代诗人，他可能是最后的白银诗人，他本人跟这批诗人的关系非常密切。我是新一代诗人，我很钦佩布罗茨基，但我离白银诗人有些远，但正是因为这种距离，带给我一些新鲜感。我16岁到了美国，我不希望跟俄语诗人离得太近，我希望我身边的人是不懂俄语的，任何语言、时间、地点上的距离都会带来清晰度。
东方早报：你和布罗茨基一样，到美国后也翻译了大量俄语诗。你翻译诗歌的原因是什么？
卡明斯基：在我看来，翻译和读诗都是身体性的，都是因为饥饿。布罗茨基也是如此。我把俄语诗吸收进自己的身体，有时候太激动了无法停下来，我对语言和诗歌就是爱，我觉得太棒了，所以把它翻译出来给大家读。
东方早报：那么纳博科夫呢？你觉得他用俄语写的诗怎么样？
卡明斯基：我更喜欢他的小说。我不能说他是一个伟大的诗人，他首先是一个小说家，但他的诗歌被翻译成英文。有一件事情要说一下，实际上是布罗茨基说的，有一些小说家本身的语言就很有诗性，他们最初的愿望是做一个诗人，但是他们的语言很好，比如海明威。有一个故事，纳博科夫为什么用英文写书？1939年的时候，他和家人生活还比较困难，出版商说，你用英语写一本小说我就给你们家买去美国的船票，所以他开始写。他是被迫用英文写作的。
东方早报：除了布罗茨基，诗集中还有很大篇幅是你献给其他白银诗人的，比如茨维塔耶娃。你个人怎么看这个诗人群体？
卡明斯基：我在少年时代就熟读他们的诗歌，学校里每个孩子都会去读。我觉得白银诗人比黄金时代诗人更为重要。黄金时代，普希金在最上面，这是一种金字塔的结构。而白银时代的诗人，起码有5位诗人是平起平坐的，他们构建了一座文学大厦。白银时代这5位诗人是同等重要的，但他们的书写风格又各不相同。我认为，俄罗斯文学比较年轻，风格不同的声音越多就越好。
