Belfry钟楼

belfry现在常用来指教学尖塔顶上的钟及敲钟装置。其实这个词起初与”钟”毫不相干，倒是与”战争”有密切的关系。这个词最早在英语中写作berfrey，指的是被围困军队自我防御用的”窝棚”。后来，berfrey变成了一种可移动的塔型结构，从里面可以向敌人开火，从塔顶还可以观察敌人的动静，是一种可移动的了望塔。继而指防护了望人员的塔形建筑。由于了望塔必不可少的是报警用的大钟，即bell，于是又混生出belfry一词，用以指”警钟”，由此又延伸指教堂等建筑物的”钟楼”、”钟塔”。
