谁翻译了莫言的小说？

莫言运气很好，有非常出色的译者陈安娜和葛浩文。下面这段对陈安娜丈夫的采访，有些细节很令人感慨。

莫言获奖的消息宣布后，财新《新世纪》记者立即专访了旅居瑞典的作家、翻译家万之。万之上世纪70年代末开始小说创作，是《今天》杂志的主要作者及编者；80年代中期旅居瑞典，对诺贝尔文学奖多有研究，撰有《诺贝尔文学奖传奇》一书。万之的妻子陈安娜是瑞典著名翻译家，译作多达40多种，莫言主要作品的瑞典译本即由她完成。


财新《新世纪》：你的夫人陈安娜是莫言多种作品瑞典文的译者，请问她是如何开始翻译莫言的作品的？


万之：安娜开始翻译莫言作品大约是在1994年到1995年前后。此前有位汉学家罗得保创建了一家名为“鹤”的出版社，专门出版中国文学，介绍给瑞典读者。他本人翻译过鲁迅、台湾作家李昂等，也出版过安娜翻译的苏童小说《妻妾成群》，以及由我编选、安娜翻译的《当代中国短篇小说集》。一次他与安娜买菜时在楼下偶遇，两人聊起继续合作的可能性，结果不约而同都谈到了莫言。因此安娜开始翻译《红高粱家族》，1997年由“鹤”出版社出版，2001年又出版了《天堂蒜苔之歌》。可是在瑞典这个才900多万人口的国家，出一本书不卖到2000册以上肯定赔钱。罗得保因此负债累累，最后不得不一分钱不要将“鹤”转手给了另一个出版商，自己则到布鲁塞尔欧盟总部去当翻译挣钱还债。我认为这个汉学家是应该感谢的，是不应该被忘记的，他对中国文学、对推出莫言的作品有很大贡献，而且还做出了很大的牺牲。


财新《新世纪》：安娜在哪里学的中文？作为诺贝尔文学奖评委会的成员马悦然的学生，安娜的选择翻译莫言是否与他有关？


万之：安娜1985年开始在斯德哥尔摩大学中文系学习中文。马悦然确实也是她的老师之一。后来她在瑞典南方隆德大学攻读中文博士，1997年获得博士学位，导师是瑞典另外一位汉学家罗斯。安娜最早接触的中国文学大概是中文课本里的巴金的《家》、茅盾的《子夜》或者老舍的作品等等。另外她的中文老师组织学生翻译过张辛欣、桑晔的《北京人》。她第一次独立翻译中文作家作品则是苏童的《妻妾成群》。她喜欢的中国作家，除了苏童、莫言、余华，还有她翻译过或者正翻译的阎连科、虹影、韩少功、陈染等等。

有人说安娜作为学生听从马悦然的安排而翻译莫言，这只是一种传言。从作家作品的选择到具体的翻译工作，她都是独立完成的。马悦然一开始是翻译他个人比较欣赏的山西作家李锐的四部作品。2002年他还请李锐来参加过诺贝尔奖百年庆典活动。那时瑞典学院可能知道李锐多于莫言。马悦然开始喜欢莫言是在安娜翻译之后。2006年安娜开始翻译莫言的《生死疲劳》，前后花了六年功夫，是个大工程。据我所知，全稿修改至少七次，直至2012年5月才出版。

由于有了罗得保的前车之鉴，“鹤”出版社的新老板总怕赔钱，拿到译稿却不敢印。后来安娜答应不要翻译费，他才开印。《生死疲劳》只印了1000本，甚至仓库里还剩下的《红高粱》他都不想要了，因为仓库是租的，还要交钱存放。现在莫言一得奖，瑞典文版的书在书店根本都买不到，只好赶印。

知道这些背景，你也就可以想象，在瑞典要推动中国文学多么不容易。

我手里有一本英文版《生死疲劳》和《红高粱》的译者是Howard Goldblatt
另外我大概搜了一下，应该美国版的所有书都是他。
日语版的主要翻译是吉田富夫。
德语版的主要翻译是白嘉琳。
……

英文版翻译为葛浩文，可能是莫言的诸多译者中最有影响力的一位。

Howard Goldblatt ，中文名为葛浩文，美国著名的翻译家，出生于1939年，20世纪60年代服役期间在台湾学习汉语，后获得印第安纳大学中国文学博士学位。 目前是英文世界地位最高的中国文学翻译家。他的翻译严谨而讲究，“让中国文学披上了当代英美文学的色彩”。葛浩文的翻译清单包括莫言、萧红、陈若曦、白先勇、李昂、张洁、杨绛、冯骥才、古华、贾平凹、李锐、刘恒、苏童、老鬼、王朔、虹影、阿来、朱天文、朱天心、姜戎等二十多位名家的四十多部作品。
