百度翻译背后的女科学家——记吴华博士

女科学家和百度翻译

作为百度翻译技术负责人和团队的创始人之一，吴华博士在机器翻译及自然语言处理领域浸润多年，负责过多项机器翻译的研究与开发工作，开发了多款自然语言处理(NLP)产品，申请专利20余件、发表论文30余篇。丰硕的研究成果得到国际学术界的广泛认可。2011年吴华受邀担任NLP领域重要国际会议IJCNLP的机器翻译领域主席(Area Chair)，2012年担任NLP领域最好的国际学术会议ACL的机器翻译领域主席。去年，她又被遴选为ACL 2014年的程序主席(Program Chair)，在国际会议中，程序主席承担着最重要的学术职责，也代表着世界级的学术地位和影响力。对技术的深刻理解和宏观把握，也让她在百度得到认可，荣任百度主任研究员，自然语言处理部技术负责人。她积累多年的研究经验，在百度的三年间开花，结果，并且渐成枝叶繁茂之势。

这三年间，吴华博士负责的百度翻译项目从无到有，依托百度作为最大中文搜索引擎所拥有的海量的双语资源，从开发基本翻译系统到攻克技术难题，从上线单一的web自动翻译到布局多语言、多形式、多入口的产品形态，不仅使百度翻译逐步成长为一款广受喜爱的互联网产品，也彰显了百度技术实力，提升了百度技术影响力。

这一切的背后，是这位女科学家以自己在机器翻译和自然语言处理领域的深厚积累和对新技术新方法的敏锐感知，制定了综合利用各种机器翻译技术和资源的、面向互联网应用的技术策略。实现这一策略的是依托百度人才成长机制、吴华博士参与组建并精心培养起来的百度翻译团队。

当今互联网用户的翻译需求错综复杂，有跨语言聊天的需求，有利用翻译进行跨语言贸易的需求，有利用翻译产品多语言资源学习外语的需求，有浏览外语网页，获取更多资讯的需求，不一而足。吴华博士介绍说，与业界同类产品相比，百度翻译拥有卓越的机器翻译核心技术、领先的语料挖掘和过滤技术以及高效的海量计算技术。百度翻译通过高效的数据挖掘技术从网页库中自动发现和获取双语资源，采用机器学习的方法更有效地平衡双语语料的覆盖率和准确率，在此基础上研发的混合翻译系统，结合自动聚类，主题模型等先进技术，能够灵活应对各种翻译需求，使各个领域的翻译更加精准。

在解释复杂的技术策略时，女科学家举了互联网上调侃型翻译的例子，生动有趣。如翻译“how old are you”时，就会被互联网中大量存在的调侃型翻译“怎么老是你”干扰，而百度翻译能够智能甄别和过滤，并给出正确的翻译结果。
