「游戏副本」译成英文，该怎么译才准确、地道？

dungeon泛指一切地下城类的相对封闭的冒险空间。
传奇里面的猪洞或者WoW里辛特兰的那个野外巨魔城市，都可以被称为地下城（dungeon）但是不能被称为副本（instance），因为这些地下城里所有玩家是在一起的。
副本的定义是为每一组玩家单独生成的地下城，最初的设计目的是减小抢怪压力。

一般说来能够引起混淆的就是”Instance”与”Dungeon”。先引用一段wowwiki上关于instance的解释：

“Dungeons, keeps, and other confined areas can have sub-areas called instances (aka instance dungeons). These instances are special areas in the World of Warcraft where your group or raid party is able to interact with a dungeon privately; that is, without interference from other parties or raids. It is also a respite from the global PvP environment on a PvP server. The terminstance has been often conflated and interchanged with the term dungeon.“

其他人也提到了，副本存在的目的是在不受干扰的情况下让有限个玩家在相同区域进行冒险。而instance的基本含义为例子，有点像编程中的实例变量。试想，同一个区域，我们看作是一个数据类型，而玩家们则是在这一类型实例化之后的“副本区域”上进行的冒险。所以将副本翻译为instance是毫无问题的。（准确来说副本这个词是由instance翻译而来。）

但是根据这张图片可以看到，暴雪在3.2版本十字军的召唤宣传片中的用词为dungeon，来指代新出的5人英雄副本十字军的试炼。可见instance与dungeon基本上可以算是同义词了，翻译成dungeon也问题不大。

不过真要严格区分这两者的话，请继续看：

dungeon的原意是地牢，instance的原意是例子，而我们习惯上则叫为“副本”。这其实并不准确，请看下面这个英雄榜的截图，其中并没有副本的身影。

因为副本只是单纯的游戏性产物，是暴雪为了方便玩家不被打扰地冒险而设计出来的便利性区域。不论是5人、10人还是25，40人，我们都可以称之为副本，instance。

而地下城则是从剧情角度而言的，一般冒险的区域都是某某BOSS的宫殿或者巢穴一类的，而这些地方多半位于地下，所以习惯上称之为地下城，也就是dungeon。但是同样也会有些不在地下进行的冒险活动，为了描述的方便我们同样称之为地下城。
而暴雪为了区分人数，自己定义10人以上的冒险区域叫做“团队”也就是raid。从广义上来说raid也是dungeon的一部分，虽然在魔兽世界中dungeon只代表5人冒险区域。（所以下文统一称为dungeon，取用其广义含义而忽略raid。）

dungeon与instance在魔兽世界中重叠度非常大，PVE的紫装几乎完全来自单独为某些玩家开辟的instance，但从剧情上来说这里就是dungeon。但是某些任务中为了方便你会进入只有一个人的“镜像”，这个镜像其实也算是instance。而同样，你在可以与其他玩家一起行动的野外区域也存在一些地下场景可供探索，这也算dungeon（只是不掉好装备罢了。）

简而言之dungeon是剧情下的定义，而instance则是出于游戏性的考虑，在装备至上的魔兽世界这两个词常常是紧密相联的：没有好装备的dungeon根本无人探索，而有好装备掉落的instance我们为了方便也称之为dungeon。大概就是这么一回事啦~

Dungeon是Role Play的说法，中文的标准翻译是地下城，或者地城，或者地牢。副本对应回去则是Instance。一个“副本”的含义基本上很明确，是程序角度看过去的一个实例。而地下城的含义则比较宽泛，不同的游戏，或者同一个游戏在不同的情况下，可以有不同的标准。
WOW里也有一些人称“野外副本”的东西，不过这个已经是概念泛化后的俗称了。
要把副本翻译回去的话，得看想翻译出什么风格。想营造出一种气氛的话，果断翻成Dungeon；如果是站在一个游戏营造的世界之外的角度进行陈述的话，还是用instance比较好。

wower，或者EQer等等，会告诉你“副本”本身并不是一个表示某个地域的词汇，原文本是“Dungeons”——地下城，“副本”只是表示每一个冒险小队会进入属于自己的，与其他小队隔离的单独的地下城，每一个小队进入的地下城都是复制品，于是才有了副本一词。。
