如何翻译「举头三尺有神明」 ？

我的第一反应是「战争之王」里的情景。
尼古拉斯凯奇走私军火发了横财，他的爸妈不知道他的具体工作，来到他的豪宅庆祝他的婚礼：

我觉得「There is something above you」很贴近「举头三尺有神明」。
我知道一直有人（神）在我身边。虽然我没见过他，也不知道他的名字，但我清楚如果我做了好事，他会奖励我，如果我做了坏事，他一定会惩罚我。
他庇护着我，无处不在。
看了上面几个答案，都提到了God或god，我感觉直接提及便失去了最原始的敬畏。我觉得，表达敬畏通常不是你做了什么，而是你没去做什么（我想说戒律，可似乎强迫性过重了一些）。

1. “神明”在翻译的时候，最好能转换成“鬼神”的概念。
为什么？“神明”和“鬼神”在中文的语境中完全等值吗？个人认为显然不是，只能理解为这是题主朋友自己的看法。这个看法可以被超过半数以上讲中文的人接受吗？估计不会。
神明的“明”强调一种正义的化身，随时监督凡人行为的是非对错。这尊神即使在上界也属于不食神间烟火的那种，无欲无念，就像摄像镜头一样两眼直勾勾地监控。该赏该罚全靠它的在案记录。而“鬼神”则是一个庞乱芜杂的集合，从聊斋到西游，从天庭到地狱，各种善恶美丑的鬼和神都有。如果今天在你头上轮值的是法海也还罢了，如果是画皮中的女鬼却如何是好。所以我认为，这是完全不同的两个概念，彼此不可替换。
2. 整个句子最好能传达一种“崇敬、畏惧，光明、感召”的意念。
个人认为，“举头三尺有神明”作为警示意义的要点就是慎独：不要以为身边没有人就可以做坏事。这样看来，唯一有关系的“意念”只是畏惧，跟崇敬、光明、感召几乎都没有什么交集。从技术角度来说，以有限的词汇表达那么多意思也是很难做到的，否则就很可能会偏离原意。同样，这也是题主朋友自己的观点，估计不会被多数讲中文的人认同。
综上所述，我以为，题主首先应该做的不是跟英国的朋友讨论，而是跟提出这些翻译条件的朋友磋商。搞清楚就这句话他对中西文化背景的认知，他想强调那些意素的深层原因，他究竟如何理解这句俗语的要点，以及他设想在什么样的语境下使用其英译。假定该朋友传达了不正确的，或不完全正确的，或有偏差的中国文化，译者岂不是发挥了负面作用。所以，首先审查附加条件是题主的责任。
另一方面，只有题主了解朋友的英语水平。如果他/她一点儿不懂英语，那应该信任专业人士，自己没必要提任何附加条件。除非该朋友怀疑译者的中文水平。
