物极必反用英语怎么说？

百度过，觉得那些句子太长，不够精炼，不知道能不能用分词短语来表示成： The extremity reached, the course reversed？

这一类的问题有个误区，就是认为只要找到最准确的译法即可放之任何填空皆对。还看到有“沧海桑田”，“天老地荒”等都大致属于这一类。

但是事实上在不同的上下文中译法应该不一样。举个中文的例子：
a)第一代博物馆把来访的人只当作旁观者。
b)旁观者是无辜的。
c)旁观者清，当局者迷。
d)旁观者迅速散去。

a)中的旁观者应译为viewers；b)为onlookers或bystanders；c)可同b)，也可译为outsiders。d)译为passersby似乎更准确一些。

再举一个四字成语的例子：
a)逃犯已到了草木皆兵的地步。
b)神仙吹了一口气，只见草木皆兵，团团围将上来。

显然这两个草木皆兵意思完全不一样。

物极必反也是一样的，其译法要看上下文而定。试模拟几个（译文仅限划线部分）：
a)兄弟，算了吧，物极必反的道理你懂的。
b)倒霉事不会总落在你一个人头上，物极必反。
c)他也太嚣张了，你看物极必反吧？
d)过分严厉也没好处，物极必反嘛。

a)是最抽象的，题主的译文可用，但需稍微修改一下The extremity reached, the course will be reversed. 或者更简洁一些The limit reached, things reverse themselves.
b)可用英语谚语“路必有弯，事必有变”。It is a long lane that has no turning.
c)可考虑来自圣经的“恶有恶报”。sow the wind and reap the whirlwind.
d)电影《功夫梦》中“过犹不及”的译文用在这里就挺好，因为其中同时也包含了“物极必反”的意思。Too much water drowned the miller.

危急解密：凡不好译的中文可先用日常白话解释一下（想象给某个学中文的外国孩子解释某样事物），然后将解释的话翻译成英语，再加提炼修饰即可应急。如果用中文解释中文都做不到，那就不用谈翻译了。
