同一封信，译得好或译不好，意思差别很大

萧乾是著名的前辈作家和翻译家；欧阳子（笔名）20世纪60年代毕业于台湾大学外文系，在校时与同学白先勇等人合创知名的《现代文学》杂志，并以此笔名发表小说，后旅居美国，在创作与评论两方面都有实绩。

限于篇幅，我们择取了其中谈文学的主体部分，读者或可于其中略见挚爱文学者交流时的情形与观点，并可由此引出重读一些作家作品的兴味。

萧先生：

五天前（八月廿五日）我收到香港三联书店寄来的一个邮件，打开一看，竟是您托书店寄赠的新书《一本褪色的相册》，大喜，急不待等地翻开来看，赫然见到《〈王谢堂前的燕子〉读后感》这标题，我简直愣呆了。

我内心充满感激与感动。两年前在爱荷华见到您，留下永难抹灭的印象，后来我寄送您几本书，也收到了您的回函，但我没想到您能从百忙中抽出时间阅读我的作品，更是万没料到您会那么认真诚恳地写文章讨论我的书，以及关于文学的种种问题。您提到几点不同意我的地方，说得都很对……只是有一点我不大了解：《飘》的作者爱憎分明，同情南方，从南方人的观点来讲述故事，照您的意思，是不是凭这一点就应该减低其文学价值？我相信现代的人都同意，奴隶制度非常不人道，非常不好。但大家还是爱读《飘》的故事。这难道意味着读者的是非观念混淆？

说起《飘》这本书，就又使我想起译者傅雷。在爱荷华时，您谈话中数次提到傅雷，我心里就猜想，您和傅雷大概有过很深厚的情谊。我从中学时候起就喜欢阅读西洋小说的中译本，那时在台湾，可以普遍买到，虽然译者的名字往往不印出来。傅雷的译笔真好，真传神！白先勇顶佩服他了。文革时候他跳楼自杀，这消息就是先勇告知我的。先勇为此大为悲恸。（他在《台北人》的《冬夜》一篇里，说起陆冲“跳楼”，很可能就是傅雷事件的联想。）

《一本褪色的相册》这新书，我用了三天的时间，仔细读完了它（我的阅读速度很慢，尤其眼睛开刀之后），读后百感交集，非一言两语所能概括解说。我对于您为人之“真”与耿直，十分感佩，并羡慕您生逢大时代，年轻时候有过那样丰富的生活经验。您的文字真好，像第一节《在黯淡灯光下》，每一句都引发读者深深的感触和共鸣。《往事三瞥》写三件不同的遭遇，但主题紧密相关，故可一体视之，我读了异常感动，也深觉您写作手法之高明。（文字好，剪裁好，含义深……）从书尾附录的《访问记》，我得知您有意再写小说，我心中至为欢喜！您考虑写一个精神上没有祖国的人，这更是引起我的兴趣，因为我自己这大半辈子，也时常思考着这个问题！

回函我寄上三篇文章之影印，其一是夏祖丽女士在1976年夏天对白先勇的访问，另两篇是我的文章。今天就此，祝您及您家人

数周前收到您九月十七日在医院里写的长信，真是感激与感动。对于您的健康，我也是非常的挂念。您已完全恢复出院了吗？剖去了左肾，病根切除，是否体力就壮一点？请好好保养，八三年再来美国。希望那时文洁若女士能一起来。我非常欢迎您们来德州奥斯汀，在我家过几天“乡居”似的安静生活。

萧先生，对于您加予我的称赞，我是由衷的感激，然而我并不是您想象中那样具有领导性，“推动一个文学运动”的人物。反之，我天性内向，不喜交际，当年办《现代文学》时，我也只是默默地做事，并没什么“风头”。我的同窗走上写作之路，也绝非由我“带动”！

我想起来，《飘》确是傅东华所译。据我所知，这本书一般只被视为写得很好的通俗文学作品，并不被当做第一流的小说。我只是在初中时期草草看过一次译文而已。我想，《飘》之所以如此有名，和此作品的电影有极大关系。费雯丽和克拉克·盖博的高湛演技，使这故事成了永恒。（技巧或演法，真是关键！）……

 

 

傅雷翻译的《约翰·克利斯朵夫》六册，我是高中时候读的，读后感动之至。我来美国之后，很奇怪美国人不大知道罗曼·罗兰这本书，因为台湾的中学生和大学生，几乎无人不知此书（若没读过，至少听过）。后来我领悟，是译者傅雷，铸定了罗曼·罗兰在中国人心目中的永恒地位。一个作品，译得好或译不好，真有天壤之别！

萧先生，您一生有过那样多的生活经验，见闻广，常识丰富，又有强烈的道德意识，您若写长篇小说，凭您的文字技巧与裁剪的工夫，很可能成为大杰作。如果不写，实在太可惜！但当然，身体健康的保养是第一要素。能够“留得青山在”，一切计划才有可能实现，在此寄上遥远的祝福。
