“土豪”应该怎么翻译 周黎明解作:北京土包子

最近，“土豪”一词很火爆。苹果手机中有一款是金色，就被命名为“土豪金”。我甚至从这个远在得克萨斯腹地小镇的食堂里，听到留学生朋友使用此词。

《华尔街日报》中文版总编袁莉在网上问：“土豪英文怎么翻译？”引出无数网友的尝试，如new lyrich，upstart，prov-incial tycoon，rural rich，vulgarty-coon，等。南大英文系教授但汉松借用一美国情景戏剧的名字，将其称作“BeverlyH illbillies”，颇为传神，将好莱坞富豪云集的比华利山庄（B everylyH ills）和土包子（H illbillies）合而为一。只是加州比华利似乎离我们远了一些，容易造成认知上的混淆，所以影评人周黎明先生说，不如本地化一下，改作B eijingH ill-billy吧（北京土包子）。只是这么一来，北京之外的土豪们心里又不平衡了。混了半天，一翻译过来，自己怎么连土豪都不是？

为了照顾这些土豪们的情绪，我也提供了一个译文，叫richrednecks.在美国南方，没文化的老土常被人称为“红脖子”（redneck），再加上有钱（rich），大概也就是土豪了吧。

每次这种网络新词的翻译，都能激起不少有趣的讨论。比如前些年，大家对于“不折腾”的翻译，就让人从多个侧面去认识这三个字到底指的是什么，是指不要反反复复（D on‘tflip flop）、“不走岔路”（D on’t get sidetracked），还是不要有什么大变化（D on‘t start m ajor changes）呢？后来有人翻作“N oZ-turn”可谓音义俱佳，妙手偶得，但大部分情况下，不是所有的新词都能找到这样的对应。除了少数科技用语之外，语言和语言之间隔着文化几重山，只能类似而不能重合。有时候，外媒只是采用音译的办法，外加补充解释，以示中国特色。比如“城管”一词，在美国找不到对应的概念，所以就被一些美国记者直接说成“chengguan”。

这些中文热词的翻译，倒是从不同侧面，让人去琢磨一些新生的社会现象。“土豪”的翻译，让我联想到了人们对于先富起来的这群人心里都是什么滋味。包括我自己的翻译在内，大部分英译者阐释下“土豪”的内涵，是“有钱没教育”的暴发户。这个理解其实和大部分人在使用“土豪”一词的具体所指出入并不大，从翻译上说问题不大，但是从社会舆论上来看，这种理解却不是没有问题。

如果我们的理解是有钱的人一定就没有文化、穷人就一定有更好教育，那就一厢情愿了。在美国的学校里，好学区通常都在有钱人的学区。而讨论起学区资源分配的时候，一个常见的标准，是领取“免费或者低价午餐”学生的比例。在美国公立学校，低收入家庭的孩子，午餐是免费或者低价提供的。这个数据，通常被用来衡量一个学区所在地富裕程度。但是这个数据又不是用来贬低贫穷学区孩子的，而往往是用来调整公共教育政策，以便让穷人的孩子，也有公平的机遇得到教育和发展。而富裕地区，因为支持教育投资的房产税，已经让富人的孩子有足够的资源，获得充分的社会流动性。

其实同样的对比在中国或者任何一个国家都一样存在。有钱人应该说有更好的资源，让其子弟受到更为良好的教育。所以有钱人下一代变成“有钱没教育”的“土豪二代”（我们姑且称之为土豪2.0吧）的几率应该更小一些。这里更关键的问题，是教育政策和资源投入，如何能给所有人公平的机遇，而不仅仅因为其父辈的原因，有的人永远没有机会，而有的人起跑点太靠前。

当然，土豪1 .0们的资源，可能只用来教育土豪2.0学文化课，而不注重品德的修养。如周国平先生说的那样：“物质上无微不至，功课上步步紧逼，精神上麻木不仁”。这样的土豪二代出来，做人做事，往往还不如文化资源上落伍的穷人后代。如果土豪二代这样，那真正会成为有钱有知识，但没文化没教养的新一代“土豪”。

怎样让有钱人成为乡绅乡望，而非传统意义上那种土豪劣绅呢？我想不去一竿子打翻一船人，对于“土豪”们区别对待，分别出其间有文化没文化的，对子孙有眼光没眼光的，对周围社区有爱心没爱心的，这就是一个很好的起点。
