马来西亚《新海峡时报》援引调查人员的话称，马航失联客机曾在失联的8个小时中持续低飞并采用“地形掩护”战术，以躲避雷达追踪。

Officials searching for missing Flight MH370 are investigating whether whoever was in control of the plane when it veered off course deliberately flew low to avoid detection by military radar. Experts say so-called “terrain masking” could explain why the plane was apparently able to avoid being spotted after its last confirmed location.

参与搜索马航失联MH370客机的官员正就飞机偏离航线时控制飞机的人员是否故意采取低飞策略以躲避军用雷达追踪一事展开调查。专家表示，这种叫做“地形掩护”的技术能够解释为什么飞机可以在最后一个确认地点之后没有被追踪到。

errain masking（地形掩护）多用于空战（aerial combat），是在山区等地形采取极低空飞行的方式（flying at extremely low elevations）降低被防空武器（anti-air weaponry）探测到的几率。

目前已有26个国家参与搜救工作，马方官员要求位于飞机可能的飞行路线（potential path）上的各国重新分析军用雷达数据（military radar data）以希望缩小搜索范围（narrow down the search area）。同时，调查发现，飞机最初从计划航线偏离（divert from its scheduled course）并不是手动操作（manual control），而是通过输入机上计算机系统的指令（instructions entered into a flight computer）实现的，但是尚不清楚该指令是在起飞前就已输入还是飞机飞行过程中输入的。
