翻译不能没有专业知识

作家不能光靠语言打天下，这道理很简单，并不是有了语言能力就什么都能写好，你还得有生活、有思想、有情感体验，即对生活有独到的体悟和理解；教师更不能光靠语言打天下，如没有专门知识与教学经验，只凭口才好，会说，那就成了卖嘴皮子的，很快就会被学生和家长戳穿；同样道理，搞外文翻译，也不能光凭语言能力。

翻译是将一种语言转换成另一种语言，而语言是要“用”的，即依附于一定内容的。维特根斯坦很强调语言“植根于生活形式之中”，他说过：“一个语词在实践中的用法就是它的意义。”某种语言一旦依附于某一专业内容，那就成了一种专门知识。比如，原子弹工程中所用的语言，和养鸡场里所用的必定很不一样。哪怕不用专业术语，即其中的日常语言，用法也会有差异。让一个养鸡场工人进入原子弹建造机构，很多对话他就不一定听得懂；同理，让原子弹工程师到养鸡场帮一天工，也难保不会“呆若木鸡”。如果是一个中国养鸡场的小工到了美国原子弹中心，虽然已学会一口流利外语，要当个帮工，仍得经过繁复培训才行。

我曾在一个纪念诗人泰戈尔的朗诵会上，听一位中国翻译转达一位印度学者的论文，但有一段怎么也听不懂，因里边老是出现“月牙儿学校”，说徐志摩等人都从月牙儿学校毕业，那里出了好多诗人……我遍搜自己的现代文学知识库存，怎么也找不到对这个学校的记忆，心想好多诗人并不是同一地出生，怎么会在同一学校就学？忽然急中生智，想明白了：他说的一定不是学校，而是现代文学史上有名的文学团体———“新月社”！想想真是为难了翻译，他如没有好好学过文学史，不熟悉新月派的诗人，他又怎么可能将这句英语转换成一个专门文学团体的名称？其他一些文学团体，诸如“未名社”“语丝社”“新潮社”“湖畔社”，还有刊名如《论语》《太白》《骆驼草》《人间世》《人世间》《宇宙风》……如没掌握专门知识，要想准确翻译，几乎是不可能的。

几年前曾有中国译者将俄国文献中的蒋介石译成“常凯申”，闹了很大的笑话，因蒋介石是太有名的人，中国人懂外语而不知蒋介石太不应该。其实问题还是出在两个方面，一是不熟悉中国现代史(真正熟悉就不会杜撰出常凯申这个人名来)，二是不熟悉俄国史上对中国的表述(如熟悉就不会读不出此一人名即指统治中国20多年的蒋介石)。所以还不是一个语言能力问题，而是“语用”问题，即与语言有关的历史知识问题。

最近又看到一个相近的事例，据3月2日《新民晚报》，在三联书店去年出版的美国学人傅葆石的专著《灰色上海，1937-1945：中国文人的隐退、反抗与合作》中，将王辛笛译为“黄辛笛”，文载道译为“道载文”，钱君匋译为“钱君涛”……这些人名，如光凭外语音译要想转换回来，如没有对这些现代作家的了解，那是不可能译对的。我相信此书一定已经经过了有专业知识的编辑的反复校改，不然肯定还会错得让人读不懂。现在出现的错误，只是校改中的遗漏罢了。

这就证明了一点：作家也好，教师也好，翻译也好，无疑，还应包括编辑、记者(还有相关的领导们)，除了自己已经达到的语言水平、写作能力……等等以外，在从事每项具体工作前，还有一项必要的专业方面的学习要进行，还得一次次地进行自我培训！比如，要编辑一本现代文学的书，就得读一点现代文学史，得了解一下当时的创作与文学氛围，得备一部较为可靠的专业工具书，不然是肯定不成的，凭运气，希望作者自我把关，终究不是万全之策。做哪一项工作，都要进入这一领域，要有一定专业基础，即至少要看得见这一行的轮廓，而不能完全是瞎子摸象。这应成为一种常识。这就像出门卖菜要带上钱，帮人搬家要准备好绳子一样。鲁迅说得更逗：“有关本业的东西，是无论怎样节衣缩食也应该购买的，试看绿林强盗，怎样不惜钱财以买盒子炮，就可知道。”(1936年7月7日致赵家璧信)此即指必要的准备一点不可省。省下这些就是偷工减料，就是瞎混瞎蒙，就有坑蒙拐骗之嫌。所以我以为，在新职工的专业培训中，这即使不是第一条，也应成为很重要的一条吧。
