为什么在翻译外国人人名的时候，其间隔号有时是“·”，有时是“-”？

• 横线对应西文人名里的连字符（hyphen），主要出现在复姓里（比如「列维–斯特劳斯」（Lévi-Strauss））。
  注意：这里应当用较短的横线符号（比如键盘直接可以输入的 hyphen「-」或更高级的 en dash「–」），不建议用占一字宽空间的 em dash / 半个破折号「—」。因为「—」应当对应西文里连接两个人名字的 en dash，比如「玻色—爱因斯坦凝聚」（Bose–Einstein condensate）。
• 间隔号对应西文人名的词间空格。更严格的情况下，只用于分隔姓名各部分（一些人主张：「John von Neumann」这样的人名应当译作「约翰·冯诺伊曼」而非「约翰·冯·诺伊曼」）。

你要是自己去看看「卢贡–马卡尔」和「列维–斯特劳斯」的原文就不会有什么疑问了。善用维基百科。

另外，很多蠢货不会输入间隔号，以及新浪之流因历史遗留问题而养成了坏习惯，于是不少人完全用横线代替间隔号。这种情况是另外一码事。这不值得学习。

@圆SAN圆 的答案代表了另一类不懂西文 typography 的人：搞不清 dash 和 hyphen 的区别，不会辨别细微的语义差异。

以下需要注意：

• Hyphen 在 hyphenation 中的意义和在复合词（包括复姓）中的意义不同。
• Dash 和 hyphen 的意义不同。当然，日常写作时没什么人区分它们，但在细心的 typography 里必须区分。你可以认为区分 dash 和 hyphen 的行为太专业，但如果自以为这是「错的」，就只能算作少见多怪了。
• 「Bose–Einstein condensate 里，Bose-Einstein 已经算是一个字了，复合字而已，就跟复姓还是一个姓一样」——这种思维方式，说好听点算是「不拘小节」。

另外，我震惊地发现 @圆SAN圆 居然能把上文中「连接两个人名字的 en dash」这话断章取义成「dash 的正确用法……“连接两个人名字”这样而已」。拜托各位阅读答案时要注意语境，不要觉得每句话都在下定义。

以下的“字”是word的意思。

-连接一个字的两部分，和西文里的hypen用法相同。西文里的-不但在人名，在例如转行的时候可以连接任何一个字的两部分。
.连接两个字，对应西文里的空格，中文译名引入.这种用法，只是因为直接把空格搬到中文里用太不和谐且不清晰了。

举个例子来说，如果有个人叫做 安娜.列维-斯特劳斯.马克思， 他的first name是安娜，middle name是列维-斯特劳斯，last name是马克思。
对应西文是Anna Lévi-Strauss Marx。

Bose–Einstein condensate 里，Bose–Einstein 虽然已经算是一个字，但是为了表示Bose和Einstein是平行关系的两个人，而非一个复名Bose-Einstein的人，所以此处均用dash。至于dash的正确用法，绝非“连接两个人名字”这样而已，请参阅wikipedia。
