交替传译时，口译员如何判断什么时候开始翻译？

最理想的做法是儘量不打擾講者的思路。

每個講者與口譯合作時的習慣都不一樣。有的人會非常照顧譯者，儘量把話切短以降低翻譯的難度。但也有一些人完全不考慮這點，自顧自講個沒完。譯者遇到這種講者也要能應付才行。

譯者必須能夠給講者足夠的信心。需要通過口譯員跟聽衆溝通的講者是孤獨且無助的，面對一羣語言不通的聽衆，他只能把一切都寄望於口譯員身上。優秀的譯者，在任何時候都不能讓講者產生「他是不是沒聽懂」「我講這麼長他會不會記不住」的擔憂。頻繁用眼神或手勢暗示講者稍微講短一點不是最好的做法，因爲這樣一來講者就會有了顧忌，思路可能就沒那麼通暢了。
