纺车女工学英语当上翻译真不易

“一个居民很有故事，只有小学文化，原本是个纺车女工，自学英语六年多，后来当上了翻译、英语老师，现在还在翻译小说……”“真的？是太原人？”4月10日，从朋友口中得知这一线索，记者就迫不及待地想结识她。当日下午，记者见到今年60岁的李燕云。

退休后没事干翻译小说吧

李燕云面带微笑款款走进房间时，不觉令人眼前一亮：扎着长发，身材匀称，打扮精致，文雅、随和的她就是执著的励志大姐？“要说我学英语，那故事可长了！”李燕云边说边在记者面前坐下，随手掏出一本495页的英文小说《the　clan　of　the　cave　bear》。紧接着她在电脑上打开了自己翻译了3万多字的译文，“现在已经译到了425页”，说起翻译英文小说，她认为看英文小说和翻译英文小说是两个层面的事儿，看英文小说只需了解每句话的大概意思，而翻译是一种再创作的过程。翻译过程相当艰涩，翻生词看了两遍，然后逐句逐句地译，译好一大段，还要再顺中文，直译到自己满意为止。

退休这十年，她在一家英语培训学校当英语老师。谈到为啥想起要翻译英文小说，她说“这也是让自己老有所学，老有所为。将来译完了，也算是我这辈子的又一个突破。”

李燕云小学毕业后正逢“文革”，一直没再上过学。18岁进入山西针织厂，做起了细纱上的纺车工。“一个人管500个纺锭，绕3个车道，一天干下来，得走60里地，非常非常辛苦！一会儿线断了，要接线，这边接不好，那边又得换线了，干了7年。”李燕云似乎又回到了车间，回忆压抑得她连吐长气。

1977年，怀孕7个月的她终于能下纺车了，那时，她就暗下决心：我要改变自己的命运，为了孩子，我也得想办法！办法是什么？李燕云当时也不知道：“没人没钱，什么也没有。”当孩子出生4个月后的一天，她偶尔听到广播里的英语讲座，正播放到26个字母的后13个。学英语的念头闪电般地闯进了李燕云的脑子。很快，她向邻居一位小女孩借了一本英语书，开始对着广播学。“那会儿，会说英语是一种身份的象征，别人都以为我头脑发热，闹着玩。而我是下了决心，不学英语我就没出路。”从那时起，一天半小时的空中课堂就成了李燕云的老师，每天听。

有一回，她抱着一岁大的孩子，习惯性地拿起课本靠在窗台上看书，不料，睡醒的女儿扳倒了窗台上的暖水瓶，滚烫的开水浇在了孩子背上，到了医院，二度烧伤。看着幼小的孩子因自己的疏忽而受罪，她心疼得直掉泪：“全是我的错！”然而到了晚上，她又捧起了英语书。

五一广场英语角是由她和同学发起的

为了按时听广播学英语，她两年没上班，换来的是冷嘲热讽：这么大的人了，想成龙还是想变凤？李燕云说，当时她也看不见有什么希望，但是小学毕业的她，想着只可能在英语上跟人拼一拼。

3年时间跟着广播学完了初级英语，她又自学了一年中级英语，社会上有了辅导班后，她立刻报了名，班里除了她，都是上过高中，有基础的。“课文里很多生词，每次上课前，我都一个个查字典，背单词，把课文译出来。”李燕云觉得就像蚂蚁啃骨头一样。

培训班上的同学靳丽萍还记得，那时上课，老师经常叫李燕云站起来念课文，因为她准备充分，读的课文又快又好，还节省时间。“下课后，我们一帮同学还一起练习口语对话，五一广场的英语角就是由我们发起的。渐渐地，组成了一个英语圈，一直延续到现在。”当时在友谊商店工作的靳丽萍，因为接触的老外多，信息也广，后来，李燕云去黄河小浪底工程当翻译，就是她推荐的：“她去了，肯定能胜任！”

机会来了她成了翻译

上世纪80年代，山西针织厂有不少从国外引进的设备，厂里很发愁找翻译。李燕云所在部门负责人就推荐了她。厂长、工程师拿着一本英语书来考察了，“那是新概念英语，对我根本不是问题。”下午，李燕云就去了总厂，没有传帮带，只有两大本技术资料、说明书。熟悉了大半年，1985年6年，英国肯伯公司专家来厂调试设备，她接到了第一次口语翻译任务。“对方是英籍波兰人，名字一大溜，我去机场接时，只听懂名字叫‘扬’，我就这样称呼了，对方也很理解。”组装机器时，英国专家需要车间工人配合、需要工具，都得李燕云来翻译。工作中，李燕云也碰到了很多专业器材不知该怎么翻译，就描述出来，英国人一听也就明白了，告诉她准确翻译是什么。“大脑特别兴奋，没觉得紧张。”当年11月，英国宾得利公司销售总经理来厂进行商务谈判，她再次担任翻译。打那以后，太原灯泡厂、山西印染厂、平遥第二针织厂等十多个单位的涉外活动都相继邀请她，她先后为英国、瑞士、荷兰、意大利等外国专家担任过翻译。与此同时，她自考了大专，还加入了山西省外事翻译学会。

李燕云拿出当时的工作照给记者看，她带着外宾游卦山、逛晋祠。“1985年，咱们这儿还没有彩照，外宾都是拿回去冲洗好寄来的。”

随后，她相继为泰华国际贸易总公司驻华办事处、河南小浪底水利枢纽工程、引黄工程、阳城国际发电责任有限公司等担任过翻译。

而在生活中，低调的李燕云很少跟人谈起这些，只有亲近的朋友、同学知道她是翻译，先后找她帮过忙。“朋友要去德国看孩子，需要一个中英文的证明材料，我帮着翻译过。还有一位同学要往加拿大投资移民，他跟银行、移民局的来往信件、资料，前前后后让我在帮忙。”包括记者这次采访，李燕云一直在强调：“我是啥说啥，你们也不要夸大啊。”
