不懂中文的翻译 故翻成文雅词，词不达意

有一篇文章叫《林纾：一个不懂外语的翻译家》。“不懂中文的翻译”这个标题，可能会被误解为外国人翻译中文而不懂汉语。而这里要说的则是，中国人翻译外国作品，外语能力或许不错，中文的水平却极差，以至于让人怀疑他是否懂中文。
想到这个题目，是因为最近阅读高居翰《画家生涯》汉译本。其中一句译文是：“关于这些问题的信息，必须从正式作品以外的零星材料—如信笺、日记、随笔以及少有表露内情的题识之中重新发现。”显然，“信笺”应为“尺牍”，“随笔”应为“笔记”，“题识”应为“题跋”。特别是“信笺”，在中文里是指信纸而非书信。
“不懂中文”，自然是语言修养不足，不熟悉中文的习惯表达。还有一类，却是自以为很中国，其实也是“不懂”。如一位“翻译大家”把《红与黑》结句中的“死”译成“魂归离恨天”，把瓦雷里诗歌《风灵》中“换内衣露胸”一句改译为“换衣露酥胸”。—有人说，这类翻译的过失不在于“达”，而在于“雅”。的确，“信笺”是雅得不对，“魂归离恨天”是雅得俗，“
